The Kids

This should be a much nicer post today. No gory bits - I promise!

A definite highlight of the week in Engaruka was the children. They were so happy and playful. Always laughing. Just such a joy to be around. We would play in the dust with them until we were almost black ourselves! They were so much fun. I have some of their pictures for you today.

This was a giant dead tree that was the best see-saw (or I think you yanks call them teeder-todders?) I have ever seen.

They were so keen to pose for pictures just so they could see themselves on the LCD screen. This is Tina in her Boma (home). One of my favourite shots of the trip!

As we walked to the clinic everyday you could hear children yelling 'Hellooooooooo, Pipi!'. And they would come running as fast as they could to come meet us. 'Pipi' means lolly. Even in Africa it seems that kids are addicted to candy.

But these little kids do work hard as well. Whether it's herding cattle, carrying firewood or just general chores, they are definitely expected to make a contribution to family life.

All these beautiful children did make me feel quite clucky. To make it worse I have moved to obstetrics this week at the hospital. Yesterday I held several brand new bubs as they opened their eyes for the first time - I can only imagine the confusion they must feel as they look up to see the wrong coloured face! There is a little one though in the NICU who has been abandoned (or 'abandonated' as they say). I wonder if anyone would notice if I just smuggled her home with me.

Till next time x

Many of the photos here were taken by our own budding photojournalist, Kieran. Thanks Kizza!
